The CHS increases flood defenses, avoid discharges to the Mar Menor and improving irrigation resources in Los Alcazares (18/05/2010)

The government delegate in Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), Charo Quesada has and the Mayor of Los Alcazares, Gil Encarna Castejon, have visited the works to improve the drainage channel D -7.

This action has enabled the achievement of three objectives: reducing the risk of flooding in the town, improving the quality of water resources to agriculture through reuse and to brackish water discharges to the lagoon of Mar Minor.

The investment amounts to EUR 1.25 million and was funded with the Special Fund for the Encouragement of State for Economy and Employment (Plan E) last year.

The drain D-7 is an artificial channel was made for projects to improve irrigation in the Campo de Cartagena, designed to channel to the Rambla del Albujón and sea water from surface runoff during the rainy season in the area Los Alcazares and irrigation return.

It also includes resources to high salt concentration and prevent underground seepage arriving by sea.

These resources are treated in the Cairn debrining in San Pedro del Pinatar.

However, the said plant was not currently working to their fullest potential and could receive as much salt water if it is increased channel capacity.

On the other hand, occasional storms in the area of Mar Menor caused flooding in the urban center that that channel could not avoid.

For these reasons, the CHS began improving the operating conditions of the D-7 through existing vegetation clearing, development of ATM, the re-growth and consolidation of a stretch of 700 meters from the left bank of the canal, and as the introduction of native shrubs and other repair work.

The performance has led to increased volumes drained once treated at the desalination plant of Cairn, an improvement of the resources available for irrigation in the area through the reuse of brackish water.

In addition, these cleaning tasks have been successful, the traditional end of flooding in the area during cold episodes of gout.

Works affecting a section of drainage channel about 3.5 km that runs parallel to the AP-7, and that is from the point of confluence with the promenade of La Marana and its mouth on the boardwalk Albujón .

Details of work undertaken

Applied work has consisted of cleaning rods and drain clearing, profiling its banks, stabilization and waterproofing of the slope on the right bank by careada and concreted riprap in some sections, the raising of the pot through a wall the area of its confluence with the promenade of the Tangle, the removal of the structures, which detracted from its hydraulic capacity and its replacement with precast girder bridges, the conditioning of the service road that runs next to it and set environmental revegetation by native plant.

Moreover, environmental action has involved the planting of several native species, mainly low shrub size, to compete with the rods and stabilize the banks, eliminating much of the visual impact that produces protective breakwater.

The channel has been equipped with four gates are very large, which would in times of flooding, drain and channel directly to the Mar Menor, without going through the avenue of Albujón, part of the circulating volume by drainage, using existing steps in the AP-7 and the channel of Rame, located nearby.
