The president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), José Salvador Fuentes Zorita, visited yesterday, along with the mayor of Los Alcazares, Gil Encarna Castejon, the works to increase resources for irrigation in the Campo de Cartagena and improvement Flood defenses. This action is framed in the State Special Fund for Promoting the Economy and Employment (Plan E).
The budget is
1,250,000 euros and is being implemented by ALTEC Infraestructuras SA.
Work began in April and has already completed the first phase, designed to clean the channel D-7 of a total length of 3.4 kilometers.
Now subtract the works of increase, to increase their water carrying capacity, which will be undertaken on a stretch of 700 meters from the left.
The drain D-7 is an artificial channel was made for projects to improve irrigation in the Campo de Cartagena, designed to channel to the Rambla del Albujón and sea water from surface runoff during the rainy season in the area Los Alcazares and irrigation return.
It also includes resources to high salt concentration, and prevent underground seepage arriving by sea.
These resources are treated in the Cairn debrining in San Pedro del Pinatar.
However, the said plant is currently working to their fullest potential and you may receive as much salt water if you increase the channel capacity.
Improving the operating conditions of the D-7 through existing vegetation clearing and preparation of cash will allow an increase in the volume drained, once treated in the plant of Cairn, will increase the resources available for irrigation.
Flood
These cleanup, coupled with the regrowth and the consolidation of a stretch of 700 meters from the left bank of the canal, and the establishment of native shrubs and other repair work D-7, have made it possible to avoid episodes like September last year, when heavy rains caused flooding in the coastal town and even endangered the students of Secondary School in Los Alcazares, which had to be evicted in full school day.
